A lot has changed in web development

Things aren't the same since I started web dev, and that's ok.

Oh the good ole days the older generations says. The days when all you needed were 3 files HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. You did everything on those 3 file types and the asks were straightforward. If you weren’t sure you looked up the answer on Stack Overflow for the thread that has the 500 upvotes of people asking the same question.

I missed that boat by just a year or two. Now requirements for just junior developers seems to be HTML, (S)CSS, JavaScript, React, Typescript, SEO analytics, and even basic Web Design.

Oh, and 2 years of freelance work experience…

Now some of that is definitely rough for the entry level folks. Getting in the door with this career isn’t what it used to be.

Expert days are over

Many devs I know like to complain about all the tech we need to know for our job. It is very overwhelming. We are type A personalities with imposter syndrome - not a good balance. Spending days on on task that marketing operations or IT in a big company used to be in control over. It can be stressful.

I believe this is a positive. Job applications do list tons of languages and programs they ask people to be experienced in but aren’t expecting expertise knowledge in one thing. Most are looking for versatile, opening to learning, technical folks. Coding test are less relevant than over, which brings me to the big reason I don’t feel it’s need anymore.

AI…

Like it or not AI is here to stay and changing things at a rapid pace. I may make a longer post with my thoughts on it but AI is more about asking the right questions for your code base. This will leave more time to manage applications related to the web dev experience.
